How can I start an IPDA program at my college/university?

How big is the IPDA?

The International Public Debate Association is the fastest-growing debate style in the country. Last year, we had over 300 programs take part in/attend at least one tournament that involved the IPDA.

Can high school students participate?

This can have multiple answers.

1) If a student is dual-enrolled in college courses while in high school, and that college/university has its own IPDA program, they are allowed to participate as a college student. If you are interested in joining a team as a dual-enrolled high school student, you would first start with talking to the speech and debate coach. It is ultimately up to them on whether or not they allow a student under the age of 18 to travel/compete.

2) Some states may offer IPDA as a high school option the same as they would in offering LD, World Schools, etc.

Is the National Tournament and Convention by invitation only?

No! We believe that all programs should have the opportunity to attend a national tournament, regardless of what their seasonal record looks like. As such, students do not “qualify” for our national tournament, but rather attend with their programs and compete as they would at any normal tournament.

Does the IPDA require dues to be paid yearly?

Yes! Dues are paid at the national tournament and convention each year and are included in the total cost of entry.
